Whats going on with him?? Why did he do this??!!?

He sounds like he is shy and likes you, but doesn't want to come on too strong cause he's scared. He probably values his mates opinions, and maybe wants to see like he is all manly and in control. He wanted to show his mate your relationship, but still cared about how you reacted... The whole 'macho' thing guys do with their friends. Silly but the way it is. =/
